MCA for Creative Learning

October, 2011

Montessori Children’s Academy’s MCA for Creative Learning, uniquely offers children with speech/language, sensory, motor and /or behavioral needs an enriched preschool experience, blending the developmentally focused child-centered benefits of the Montessori method with special education and targeted therapeutic support.

MCA for Creative Learning, which opened this fall in Convent Station within Montessori Children’s Academy at 6 Kahn Road, is a private not-for-profit school that is the dream of Executive Director Harriet McCarter. In developing the program Ms. McCarter actively sought the wisdom and expertise of nationally recognized experts in early childhood/preschool education while simultaneously working with her own local multi-disciplinary team which included occupational therapist Sheila Allen.

The MCA for Creative Program aims to provide its students and their families with an exceptional Montessori experience offering “just-right” challenges and individualized support. As the OT who regularly consults with the program, Sheila observes and interacts with students and collaborates with the head and assistant teachers and parents to develop strategies based on students’ unique characteristics and styles of interacting & learning.  Her consultation addresses functional skills, and issues underlying classroom conerns.
